The last day started quite normal with the 9th league game. I was able to win against a 2 Dan (with handicap) reaching a final score of 5 wins and 4 losses.<br />
After the final endgame lesson there was a special event. The winner of the camp league was supposed to play against a top professional. The only person with just one loss was Lionel Zhang, 6 Dan from US.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Final endgame lecture.</td></tr>

Lionel got one stone handicap which means he took black and there was no komi. As an additional advantage he got 1 hour of basic thinking time. His opponent was Yukawa-sensei, 9 Dan. Since he is a professional he just got 5 minutes and therefore had to play most of his moves in the 30 second byoyomi.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">First move of Lionel.</td></tr>

The game was live reviewed by another professional right next to the actual game. I think Lionel was a bit disturbed by that but for professionals it seemed nothing special.<br />

As another special feature we were asked to guess the next move a few times. If that was the case the player whose turn it was had to write down the next move. Then we were told four different options for the next move and the ones who answered correctly got a small prize.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Yukawa-sensei is writing down his next move.</td></tr>

Lionel failed to handle a slight overplay of the professional correctly and therefore got a bit behind. He tried to come back but could not catch up again and resigned when the endgame began. Nevertheless it was a very interesting game to watch for all the spectators.<br />

After the show game there was the official prize giving. The best players of different strength sections got some cool presents. The winners in the Dan section even got a nice magnetic go set.</div>

I got a tea cup that was created to celebrate Yuki-senseis Tengen title for writing this blog. I really appreciated that but was therefore unable to make a picture of all the prize winners since I had to be there, too. </div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Maeda-sensei was a bit confused about the prizes.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
We had a "Good bye"-dinner in the evening and afterwards went back to the playing site. Many of the professionals who had done some teaching dropped by that night and played games or told funny stories while enjoying Japanese drinks.</div>
<div>
We even got an additional Shamisen presentation by Nakano-sensei. Most of us used the last chance to perform typical Japanese music themselves and went to a Karaoke bar later that night.</div>
<div>
After a long night of celebrating on Saturday everybody had to leave. Some people had to go home immediately others spent a few days more in Japan but everybody agreed that it would be great to come back next year.</div>

One of the few things I planned to visit beforehand was the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan. It is one of the biggest indoor aquariums worldwide and has some very rare animals. The aquarium is located on an island close to the Osaka port but it can be reached very conveniently with public transport.<br />
I saw a lot of cool animals but making photos of things behind glass is always challenging.<br />
I hope you enjoy some of my better photos:<br />

I was asked several times to write something about the food in Japan. I tried to make some photos of my dinner experiences. It can be a bit difficult to find a restaurant you like in Osaka. There are a lot of small shops which are specialized on a few things but you don't know which if you can not read Japanese. Some have English menus but normally not outside. I'm not sure if they had foreigners in mind but a very great invention for people not able to speak Japanese are models of the food. They take their models very serious. I even have seen plastic beer :-)</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">It's very helpful to get an idea of a restaurants menu.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
They difficult thing that remains is how to tell the waitress which dish you like. To be honest I mostly tried to prevent that by going out with people who are able to speak Japanese. When I was eating alone I had to hope that something like "Ramen onegaishimasu" does not provoke to many further inquiries.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Despite of easier ordering eating with many people is in general more fun. Especially when you try to go out with around 20 people when most restaurants do not have so many seats at all. During one of these trips we ended up in a supposedly Korean place. The funny thing was that you get raw meat and must cook it yourself on small fires at the table. The meat was very tasty. Some people even grilled shrimps but these had to be peeled before. In any case it was a good training for being fast with chopsticks. The most interesting eating experience happened a few days ago. One of the camp participants is currently fasting because of Ramadan. That means he is just allowed to eat after sunset. Naturally he want's to get a proper meal then. Some of the guys discovered an All-you-can-eat-and-drink place which is perfect under this circumstances. The whole thing costs 3,000 Yen for two hours. In the first 45 minutes they serve some basic dishes like fries, pizza or kind of "snack beans". After that you can order from a large menu. The interaction with the waiters is reduced to a minimum at that place since you order by using an electronic pen. You have to point this (magic) pen on the dish you want in the menu say how many of it and send the order. After some starting problems and a new pen we figured out in which angle the pen works best and then it was very convenient.<br />

Next to traditional restaurants there are also the standard international franchises like McDonalds and Subway Sandwiches but with noticeable different menu. Subway for example has a sandwich with shrimps but none with salami which is a bad trade in my opinion. </div>
<div>
(I don't think you are interested in this but I still can not understand why they cut my large sandwich in halves before they added the ingredients. I worked shortly for Subways and I absolutely see no point in dividing it at the start instead of the end. Any guesses?)<br /></div>
<div>
After telling you about the mostly traditional and high quality restaurants here is a tip if you have less time/money or it is 3 am in the morning. There are so called <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Wwysw6TCyI&feature=youtu.be" target="_blank">convenience stores</a>. As far as I know, they never close and they offer a decent supply of food, drinks and other stuff. The even have microwaves to immediately heat your food. Unfortunately when it comes to packed food like rice balls or lunch boxes you have to gamble about the ingredients again. Sometimes you can guess a bit from the picture :-)</div>
<div>
These stores can be found everywhere. We have two in a distance of about 5 meters.<br /><br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Yesterday we nearly had one of these "normal" camp days where nothing exceptional happens . I won my league game with 3.5 points against a Candadian 1 Dan. It was a rather exciting but we did not get a review so far. I will try to catch up and upload it all together. In the afternoon Yokota Shigeaki, 9p gave his second lecture. This time on how to handle invasions inside a sanrensei formation. In principal I highly appreciate any lecture concerning sanrensei. In practice there is the slight problem that I'm more familiar with it than the average player and therefore already read about most of the stuff Yokota-sensei showed. However I mostly remembered just the first few moves and not the complete sequences he showed so it was still interesting.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The white move is not good in this situation. Black just goes on top of it and white has to pull back. <br />
(I'm sorry for the bad light but I'm hesitant to use a large flash during the lectures.)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Shortly before the end of the lecture our special guest finally arrived: Yuki Satoshi, Judan. There are seven big titles in Japan. Most of the time all of them are held by professionals of the Nihon Kiin (the larger association) but Yuki was able to snatch the Judan title for the Kansai Kiin and of course also himself. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
At the moment there are just three person who are holding one of the big seven. The most famous Go player in Japan at the moment, Iyama Yuta, Kisei/Honinbo/Tengen/Gosei/Oza, greedily collected 5 of the them. In fact Yuki-sensei took his Judan title directly from that player and therefore reduced him down to 5 :-)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
By the way, Iyama Yuta belongs to the Kansai branch of the Nihon Kiin.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Yuki-sensei seemed like one of those important business person who are travelling around all the time. He arrived with a wheeled case since he had to go to Tokyo for a game directly after the camp visit. Shortly before, he came back from a tournament in China...</div>

Most people took their chance to get an autograph of a title holding professional...so did I. The large kanjis on the right are hard to translate into English. Today was the beginning of our last days off. Originally I planed to go to the Osaka aquarium. However, Kim-sensei, one of our teachers had to play a professional game today. Maeda-sensei was able to convince the people at Kansai Kiin to broadcast it to the public area and so we went to watch it. Actually we were hanging around and have been playing against locals. Occasionally we took a look at Kim's game but since they have 3 hours of thinking time it's not progressing overly fast.</div>
<div>
In the end Kim-sensei won by resignation and can continue competing in the Tengen league.</div>
<div>
Tomorrow I will really go to the aquarium.</div>

The teacher was a young female professional. Unfortunately I do not recall her name.<br>
We did not analyze the game much since I was the first one to finish and it seems like I made no overly huge mistakes. At least nothing which costs me my 5 stone lead. Instead you get a picture of here:<br>

For the first time I got a small prize for correctly solving an endgame homework. It's kind of a key chain with different coloured balls.<br>
My league game also went well. I won against a 1 Kyu from Phoenix, US (Another nigiri win!). My score now is 3-4 with two games left. So I still have the to finish the league with a positive score.<br>
I included some comments by Kim-sensei but the game is kind of unspectacular since we played very calmly in the opening. However it was kind of funny that he had the moyo despite of me playing sanrensei :-)

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;">Before the 1st round at Saturday morning there were unfortunately not enough Japanese player to challenge all camp participants. Therefore ten of us had to play teaching games. Normally one professional plays simultaneously against 4 or 5 people. This time they made it a bit more challenging for the teachers since our three professionals and one very very strong amateur alternately played against 10 people. That means every teacher plays every 4th move of white in 10 different games simultaneously. This led to funny situations where one professional did not follow up the 3-3 invasion of the previous one and things like that. I uploaded my game in a separate post. I would say it was close :-)</span></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Just one person of our Saturdays best four player could continue to battle on Sunday.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
On Sunday we went to visit the Kansai Kiin. This time not just for watching but to actually play a friendly tournament there. On Sundays (probably Saturdays also) there is Insei training. Insei are Go students who want to become professionals. They play in the same room as the professionals on Wednesday and Thursday. We were allowed to take a look while they were playing league games. Since my battery was empty just when we have gone upstairs I have exactly one good photo of the Kansai Kiin Insei.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Small kids training to become professional Go player.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
After watching the Insei and having lunch we started a tournament against preliminary Insei. These are even smaller kids that train at the Kansei Kiin to get strong enough for becoming Insei. At least the top 18 player of the camp played without any handicap, so we did nigiri all the time. <div>
By the way, nigiri is the way to randomly determine which player takes which color. One person places an amount of stones larger than zero and the other one guesses before if the number is odd or even. Today I won nigiri 6 out of 7 times and I think I never lost one before in Japan. So at least my nigiri score is very good :-)</div>

I don't know the actual score but I guess we lost pretty badly. I just heard of one person with an positive score at the end. However we were able to play a lot of games. We just had to wait at our seat until the next child were sent to us. I think I managed to play the most games that day, in total seven. But I lost five of them.<br />

After loosing 3 out of 4 games playing sanrensei as black I decided to switch my strategy and annoyed them by starting with a 5-5 and 5-4 point. The first station of our bus tour was Innoshima. Thorough reader of 'Hikaru No Go' might know that this is the birth place of Honinbo Shusaku and also his last resting-place. Today they are proud to be a "Go playing City" as the mayor told as. Approximately 10% of the over 20,000 inhabitants are Go player. (The German Go Federation has at most that many members at all.) One reason why so many people are attracted to Go in Innoshima could be the exciting playing site. They are among others playing in the Shusaku Museum.

After a bus tour of around three hours we arrived on the island Innoshima and walked into the Shusaku museum. We have been exptected there already. Even the mayor of Innoshima took part in the opening ceremony. He claimed to be a very strong Go player himself but I do not know if he took part in the tournament.<br /><br />

In the backyard of the museum is a reconstruction of Shusakus childhood house. There he took his first steps of becoming a Go master. His mother actually was the first one to teach him Go.<br /><br />

After the tour the actual games immediately started. Around twenty people from the camp had decided to join the tour. We played handicap games against local Go player. They had already prepared pairings for all three rounds.<br />

Our top three player were asked if they would like to play in the living house of Shusaku. It had nice boards and a lot of flair but unfortunately no air conditioning. Nevertheless everybody wanted to play there and so the organizers tried to find as much ventilators as possible.<br /><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the end we achieved a very good result again by winning 70% of our games. Somehow the ranks got mixed up with Japanese and American ranks so not all games had proper handicap. I just managed to play against two of my three predetermined opponents. Both of them were Japanese 2-Dan, like myself. We did "nigiri" and they seemed happy that I knew the word myself. I won it both times and was therefore able to play Sanrensei all the time. The first opponent seemed not very experience with that opening and I played a bit more calmly than usual to keep it friendly. The other one played quite well but I managed to win by 4.5 points.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As it is apparently a common habit in Japan everyone got some small presents after the closing ceremony. I wonder if we appear impolite by don't giving anything in return.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After the closing ceremony we went to visit Honinbo Shusaku himself. Unfortunately nowadays one has to go to the graveyard for that. It was my first at a Japanese or in general Asian graveyard. The location at the hill is very beautiful.</div>

They say if you touch the the tomb stone of Shusaku you become two stones stronger. I was a bit hesitant to to do that since I think it is a waste before someone is at least 4 Dan. However everyone of us followed the tradition to put an incense stick in front of the grave. I'm not sure how that influences the rank...</div>

In addition to the actual grave there is also a shrine for Shusaku which was build by a succeeding Honinbo. It is a traditional Shinto shrine (as far as I understood it) and directly next to the museum.<br /><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I guess that were enough photos for one day. I have even more from a really large shinto shrine at Miyajima. Tomorrow will be another friendly tournament against local players. Let's see how it goes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
PS: You should not ask a professionals how much handicap he will get in a professional game (Question to a 3p who is going to play an 8p: "So you will get 5 stones?") or tell him that he will rise two Dan levels when he gets two stones stronger (for example by touching Shusakus grave).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Actually professionals are much closer to each other than amateurs. According to one of our teacher even top professionals like Gu Li or Yi Se-tol could not give more than at most two stones to any active professional.</div>

Therefore I got black and we played with 0.5 komi. I lost by 3 points in the end. I had terrible endgame again. Maybe Maeda-sensei is right about it's importance...<br />
There are some comments by him included.<br />
<br />
As of today my score in the camp league is 2-4. I try to think positive since I think one can learn much more from lost games especially with so many professinals around.<br />

Today we had lectures and teaching games again. These things are quite interesting to do but sometimes not so exciting to write about. Therefore I will just give you a take home message of the lecture: "If you want to become stronger do not worry about territory." For safety reasons make sure to interpret this as 'do not worry about territory to early in the game'.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
However, more unusual today was our late night activity. Imagine you are in a neighborhood like the one you see in the photo below.</div>

Whatever you imagine. If you decide to go in, the chances are very high to meet some Go professionals there. The owner and barkeeper is Hideki Enda, 9 Dan professional at the Nihon Kiin. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since the trains to go home stop around midnight we had to leave at 11:30 pm. I'm sure otherwise some people would have continued to play Pair-Go and Lottery Go.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On our way home I noticed for the first time that the trains have women-only cabins. Probably they are just used in the night.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next two days we will be on a trip to Hiroshima and Innoshima. Therefore there might be no posts until I return. But I'm sure I will bring a lot of photos with me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
PS: This is an official envelope for sealing a move over night. It was used in a Kisei title match where Hideki-sensei was the referee. Even the kifu with the next move is still inside. Since this is done just in a few title matches it is quite rare to see such an envelope.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For those of you not familiar with title matches: In the really important games players have up to 8 hours of thinking time each and the games go over two days. At some point in the evening, time is called and the active player must secretly write his next move down. This should ensure that no one can use all night planning the perfect next move.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
PPS: The wooden box next to the envelope is a sake drink cup from a title celebration of Iyama Juta :-)</div>

Nevertheless I would like to tell you why our camp has been very lively on Sunday.<br />
Since it was weekend we had no normal schedule but a friendly tournament again. This time we were visited by very young and a bit older people.<br />
A female professional brought along a bunch of elementary school kids who are her students.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The one with a hat is neither in elementary school nor Japanese.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The older people were told to be frequent visitors of the US Go congress. I do not know how many or how frequently they have been there since I'm barely attending European ones. Some US people said the recognized a few of the Japanese.<br />
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
My first game was against, as far as I know, the strongest of the elementary kids. It's the one in the picture below. He is a 5(?) year old 2 Dan. I won the game by 3 points after actively giving away around 15 points with an endgame mistake. Not one of the smaller ones where you miss to play the largest sente move or something like that but one of the real ones were the border of your territory is getting captured.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I was very glad that I did not loose because of such a mistake since I already had a two stone handicap. I guess he does not have a high opinion of German endgame now...</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A very young Japanese 2-Dan is learning the location of France .</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br /><span style="text-align: left;">According to Maeda-Sensei we won the two rounds on Sunday by "a large margin" without getting more specific. After the official part some of the Japanese players stayed a bit longer. Mostly the girls you see in the picture below. So people started a second team competition (actually it could also be regarded a gender competition) which also ended in favor of the camp participants. They were rewarded with free beer provided by the loosing team. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">By the way, in western countries there are very few female Go players because most people learn Go during their study of computer science/math. In Asian countries they start playing Go at a very young age and are therefore more diverse in gender and profession. As a second by the way, the girls in the picture are 5 Kyu up to 6 Dan. They are just some girls who live close by but I would guess that they could sweep most of western national female championships.</span></div>

It was against Tetsuaki Suehiro, 3 Dan. I added some comments given by Ting-sensei.<br>
An interesting thing she said was that amateurs should think about every opponents move as a mistake first and try to punish it. I played to compliant in this game and should have tried to disturb my opponent more. In the end I lost by around 15 points.

After two days of resting...somehow, yesterday was normal camp schedule again. The day started with me being ten minutes late for my league game. I was properly punished since I lost that game.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The lunch cheered my up a bit. I had something called Donburi if I remember correctly.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The lectures began with Maeda-sensei showing the solutions of the endgame homework. I got the complete endgame sequence right but was one point off in the counting. I guess this is better than the other way around but I was still not eligible for prizes :-(</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Next was a lecture by Nakano-sensei again. This time he showed three different games where he played with white against the Chinese opening. According to him the San-san invasion (see picture) is the most recent innovation and works quite well for him. I learned a lot about that opening in general since I never play it myself.<br /><br />

In the afternoon there were teaching games again. This time I also played, against Nagano-sensei. I got six stones but my performance did not improve much compared to the morning game. (I'm wondering how much you are interested in seeing my games?)<div>
After the game Nakano-sensei told me that I should have cut and attacked his groups more severe. I generally agree with that but against a 9p it's kind of scary. It really feels like he places two stones with every move.<br /><br />

The rest of the day was freely available for open games. In the evening we have been in a very nice restaurant which served many different grilled meat sticks. I also got my first Japanese Sake there.</div>
<div>
I finished the day with playing against just another French guy (the 3rd of the day).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
PS: Since it was kind of a Nakano-sensei day I give you an extra photo of him. Actually, he is quite a good musician. I do not know how the instrument is called. Obviously its kind of a guitar but with just three strings. He even gave a small performance.</div>

Thursday was another free day. I already wrote the we had planed to visit the Kansai Kiin again. However someone proposed that we should take a look at the Kiin we did not knew so far. Therefore we decided to pay a visit to the Kansai branch of the Nihon Kiin. Please notice that we have NOT been to Tokyo. There is a Nihon Kiin building in Osaka, too. This was a very common misunderstanding. :-)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Navigating in Japan is kind of hard since you are not able to read many signs. Fortunately we had one American guy who speaks Japanese very fluently. Still, it took us about 20 minutes to find the right building which was actually very close to the station. We even frequently asked people for the way but missed the small Go Kanji when we where in front of the building the first time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Go salon was even larger than the Kansai Kiin one. We had to pay an entrance fee. Normally it is 1,200 Yen (9.24 Euro) each but we got an discount of 200.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then we sat down and waited till the desk clerk found opponents for us. The Japanese ratings are 2 more stones higher than the American one so I became a Japanese 2-Dan. (At home I started as a 2 Kyu).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I played just one game since it took a while. He wanted me to take six handicap stones. So he was probably Japanese 8-Dan. He was actually pretty tough, as far as I can say, but I still managed to win. I think our overall score was quite good.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We were way below the age average there, as you can guess from the picture. However we were told that there are younger Go player, too, but they come mostly at the weekend.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The two much younger and less Japanese looking people are French participants of the Go Camp.</td></tr>

There were Go material and merchandise article again. I actually got the funny fan with cartoons of go professionals. I called Yuki Satoshi the popstar of Kansai Kiin, earlier. I don't know how one should describe Iyama Juta after seeing this statues...<br /><br />

Therefore we do not have lectures on that days (but on the weekend). Today we took the chance to visit the Kansai Kiin instead. As you may know it is a Go organization like the Nihon Kiin but it is just located in Kansai (the region Osaka is in) and a bit smaller.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Kansai Kiin is located in the City centre. In the ground floor of the building there is a public Go salon. There is even a daily tsumego (on the left side) in front of it. I think the sentence on the door is a congratulation to Yuki Satoshi for winning the Judan title but I'm not completely sure.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
We have been the first customers. I'm not sure when it opens. However you can go there every day expect of Sundays. The playing material is very decent. I would guess that I have never been in a room with so many slate and shell stones, so far. Most of the places can be used for normal matches. Some tables are prepared for simultaneous game (like the one in the front right).<br />
<br />

There is even an extra place for following professional games. Later there were some people sitting there and watching games played upstairs. The games were broadcast live by a camera hanging over the board.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There is a small shop in the salon where you can buy playing material and funny merchandise article. I like this fan with pro cartoons a lot. Unfortunately I was just able to recognize Cho Chikun and Takemiya Masaka at first glance.</div>

In the 7th floor the really cool things are happening. It is the playing site for professional games. This room is like the regular room for "normal" Dan players. Two of the players looked very old but were still playing official games. I was wondering if they are still active or if you somehow have to play official games for the rest of your life as a professional. I will try to find out how retirement works in the Kansai Kiin.<br />

There you find Yuki Satoshi, Judan playing against a 3 Dan which name I do not know. Yuki-sensei is kind of the pop star of Kansai Kiin. He is the most successful player at the moment and won the Judan title against Iyama Juta this year. He is told to be very good in rapid games. In the NHK Cup a rapid all-star tournament he managed to be victorious four times in the last five years. He is still in competition for being the next challenger of the Tengen and the Oza title. The people at Kansai Kiin hope for him to get a second title since this would probably lead to a lot of donations by Kansai Go fans.<br />
Unfortunately for us Yuki-sensei is very busy because of him winning so much. Therefore he will not have much time to visit the Go camp. However it was quite impressive to see so many professionals playing serious games and even visit a title holder "in action".<br />
Tomorrow a lot of people will go to a trip to Kyoto. The remaining people, like myself, are planning to visit the Kansai Kiin again to play and watch a game.<br />
<br />
PS: Maybe you already noticed that I like PS's. It's just a fitting place to point out that even the single-use drinking cups at the Kansai Kiin are very beautiful.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Monday started with an introcution by Maeda-sensei. He explained the details of the camp league and especially pointed out how we could order lunch in the student canteen of the Osaka University of Commerce. After the introduction we made a short trip to the canteen so he could show us everything on site. There are actually different lanes (noodles, lunch set, rice bowl) depending on what you would like to eat. We got a nice menu with pictures of every meal.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Unfortunately my games took to long so I could not test the canteen, so far.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
After the introduction we played our first league game (see my post about it). The afternoon schedule was also very tight. First was a lecture by Sonoda Yuuichi, 9p about "Diagonally vs. vertically". The essence was: If you have more stones in a region than your opponent (you are stronger) play vertically otherwise play diagonally. It's because playing vertically, which often involves attaching to stones, strengthens all stones but the weaker one profits more from it. In the picture he explains a nice example where black should first extend his moyo and weaken his single stone at the right side. After the black stone got weaker attaching to the white stones and playing diagonally is quite profitable for black. The other guy is John Richardson who was our translator on the first day.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Following the lecture Yasuhiro Nakano, 9p and Li Ting, 1p did simultaneous teaching games. Every participant is supposed to get at least two of such games during the camp. Maeda-sensei offered to review league games for everybody not playing that day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The topic for the end of the day was properly chosen. It was about endgame. Maeda-sensei gave a short overview about endgame calculation. Along the way he stated that the middle game is most important in a game of go followed by the end game. The least important is the opening which a lot of people study the most. Additionally since nobody on earth likes to study endgame you can very easily get an edge there. The question in the picture is, if it is better for black to play in the top right corner or to capture six stones in gote.</div>

Actually he is quite serious about studying endgame. Therefore we get everyday an endgame homework to solve. Three people selected in a drawing among everybody with the correct answer got little rewards. Here you can see the "hard" version of Mondays endgame exercise. Feel free to solve it! :-)<br />

On Tuesday there were a lecture by Yasuhiro Nakano, 9p. He showed some examples where one should not just look for good shape but consider the actual situation. At the end he took a loot at the decisive game of the 25th Asian TV Cup. It was a victory for Iyama Juta, winning the first international title for Japan since eight years. In the afternoon there were simultaneous games and game reviews again.</div>

I got a large lead in the beginning but lost all of it and the game afterwards. I include some short comments by Li Ting, 1p in the game.

The league consists of 32 players from 25 Kyu to 7 Dan. At the end of the camp the winner of the league will be allowed to playing a teaching game with a 9 Dan professional. To keep it interesting all games are played with normal handicap.<br>
My first opponent was a 1-Dan from USA. He was promoted by one rank like myself. Therefore I got black and we played without komi. See the game below! <br>
According to Maeda-sensei the game was more or less ok for both until move 52. There we both played wrong. However the large mistake of my opponent was try to run away with his group after the KO with move 80 and so on. At the end I was sufficiently ahead despite many additional mistakes on both sides.

PS: One serious game per day is quite optimal for me. I'm always much less motivated to do deep thinking for the 2nd or even 3rd tournament game in a row.Jan Engelhardthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14643235353249425706noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7231817356602328534.post-39895954017134576112013-07-01T05:44:00.000-07:002013-07-01T06:05:03.526-07:00Arriving in OsakaYesterday I finally arrived at Osaka Airport. Which actually is an artificial island. After having some trouble to get at least an initial amount of money I found a nice guy with an "Osaka Go Camp" sign who directed my to a bus. At the end of the bus tour there were already waiting other people to guide me through the subway. I guess it's quite easy to get lost if the organizers take so much care of their participants.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKEDzg_cfaWiFiiWRee29uYKs-48SE9GA5nacQ2SZf_zChK62ixIDnfzZT68HwBQFa7JV29bwXq6t0EYDLkPIX6uEKFM-nA8wSy7v_pKNBSrZvaeLfMw5UBH1W6jaovbxk8BNC5K69oyEK/s1600/DSC_0108.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKEDzg_cfaWiFiiWRee29uYKs-48SE9GA5nacQ2SZf_zChK62ixIDnfzZT68HwBQFa7JV29bwXq6t0EYDLkPIX6uEKFM-nA8wSy7v_pKNBSrZvaeLfMw5UBH1W6jaovbxk8BNC5K69oyEK/s1600/DSC_0108.JPG" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
After registration everybody got this nice fan as a present by the Kansai Kiin. It is on purpose that it's empty so we can ask professionals for their signature. Next to that, I got my name badge which included just another upgrade. Since the rankings in Japan are a bit shifted compared to other parts of the world the organizers tried to balance that. For me this resulted in a promotion to 1 Kyu. I would not be surprised if the Japanese people constructed the rankings like this on purpose so foreigners can feel stronger by just coming to Japan :-)</div>

The playing site is also used for Sumo events. The circle in the middle is kind of a "channel" (I don't even know how I would call it in German). However one must constantly be careful to not stumble into it. </div>

At least I found almost free Wifi to write new blog posts. The good news is that I was upgraded into business class for the flight from Leipzig to Istanbul. It was a bit more comfortable and especially the food was much better than I'm used from planes. Unfortunately I forgot the first 1 hour of time difference and therefore missed the chance to drink large amounts of free spirits :-(<br />
Now I'm sitting in an airport pub with power supply and have to buy very expensive coke.<br />
However I would like to use the chance to present you a small tournament which is supposed to be my distraction for the rest of the evening.<br />
It's a Super-Go tournament between France and Germany, much like the ones between Japan and China in the 1980s. There are teams of 8 players filled with most the strongest players of each country. In a few minutes the first game between Toru Imamura, 4 Dan (France) and Jun Tarumi, 5 Dan (Germany) will start. Both of them are originally from Japan but are already living for many years in Europe.<br />
I would advise everybody who is stuck at an airport like me right now to drop by and follow the game. I'm confident it will be worth seeing.<br />
Just connect to KGS and look for ElyseeFRA vs. ElyseeGER!<br />
<br />

Unfortunately I do not find an appropriate translation for the German word "Reiselektüre". However I just want to briefly show what I'm going to take with me. Normally I carry approximately so many books with me that I could spend the whole stay with just reading my own books. I tried to be a bit more reluctant this time but I'm not sure if it was successful.<br>
The two Go books "Tesuji" and "Life and Death" are quite new. I ordered them this week since I heard they are an important part of Go literature and I assume they are understandable even without a Go board in front of you. Same goes for "Reducing Territorial Frameworks".<br>
My most recent acquirement is the Japanese language travel guide. I hope that I learn enough from it to ask for a game, or something like that. The "Osaka Insider" was a birthday present and contains a lot of information about sightseeing in Osaka.<br>
The only non-travel-related book is the newest novel by Terry Pratchett: "Dodger". Unfortunately I had to remove it from my cabin baggage... because of the many other books already there.<br>
I'm starting from the airport in Leipzig soon and will be flying to Istanbul first. There I will have six hours waiting time so I'm pondering if I want to make a short visit to the city centre. Otherwise I will probably be wandering around the airport looking for some free W-Lan.<br>
The camp starts officially on Monday, so expect more posts on Go in Osaka from that day on.Jan Engelhardthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14643235353249425706noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7231817356602328534.post-62961084424548847952013-06-24T09:32:00.001-07:002013-06-25T10:50:01.384-07:0051st Judan - Deciding gameSince there will not be to much posts this week here is a small amusement for everybody dropping by. It is the final game of the 51st Judan tournament, held in Osaka. Yuki Satoshi, one of the Go camp lecturers, manged to defeat Iyama Yuta with 1.5 points. I'm sure he will be surprised if everybody knows the decisive game by heart.<br />
Enjoy the game!<br />
